Medical Advancement: Egg Donor Program

The egg donor program is a medical procedure where a number of a woman’s eggs are obtained by a licensed medical staff and are kept in an “egg donor” facility where they are stored in very low temperature. Eggs, or ova, are the cells produced in the ovaries of females. It is the counterpart of the sperm, which are the cells that are produced in the testicles of males. When these two cells unite, they result to pregnancy.

The egg donor program has two main reasons why it is being done. First of all, donated eggs can be used to aid reproduction in infertile couples where the female is not able to produce fertilized eggs. Another reason is to assist in human medical research specifically human stem cell cloning research.

In almost all cases, the egg donor program is carried out in anonymity of the donor especially when the purpose is to aid reproduction. Strict and intensive medical screening of the egg donor and the egg recipient is done to ensure that they are both capable to undergo egg donation and egg reception, and that no disease is transmitted along the process.

In this era where technology is developing at a very fast pace, it is inevitable for such medical breakthroughs, like the egg donor program, to occur. Even if these breakthroughs may create conflicts in some religious or traditional beliefs, these innovations are discovered for the benefit of the human population.
